The Faculty of Health Sciences Quarterly Research Recap celebrates the remarkable funding success of our esteemed researchers and their dedicated teams between January and March 2024.

The Faculty of Health Sciences Quarterly Research Recap is a routine celebration of the remarkable funding success of the Faculty’s esteemed researchers and their dedicated teams. The below are a selection of some of the groundbreaking research projects that are driving the Faculty forward.

“This funding highlights a fraction of the important work being carried out at McMaster’s Faculty of Health Sciences. With the support of our funding community, our researchers can continue to advance knowledge and develop solutions that will enhance healthcare and benefit communities globally,” says Jonathan Bramson, vice-dean of research for the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University.

Projects awarded funding between January to March 2024 include:

  • CP@clinic Intervention to Decrease Smoking and Improve Healthy Aging. Funded By: Public Health Agency of Canada.
  • Effect of Tezepelumab on methacholine airway hyperresponsiveness in asthma. Funded By: MITACS.
  • The Proximal Femur Resection or Internal Fixation for metastases (PERFORM) Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial. Funded by: Canadian Cancer Society.
  • Detangling the molecular origins of early and late-onset preeclampsia: A pilot study. Funded by: SickKids Foundation.
  • Rapid point-of-care syphilis testing in an urban community-based prenatal care program for populations with barriers to healthcare access. Funded by: Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
  • Healthcare utilization and costs between veterans and civilians with chronic back pain, with and without comorbid mental illness: population-based cohort study in Ontario, Canada. Funded by: Chronic Pain Centre of Excellence.
  • Youth experiences of hate/bias-related violence and discrimination and impacts on mental health and well-being: a youth-led participatory action research study. Funded by: Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

  • Pregnancy’s Microbial Marvels: Unraveling the Intestinal Secrets of Maternal Metabolic Regulation. Funded by: Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

  • Multi-omic characterization of memory B cell reprogramming during oral immunotherapy and outgrowth of food allergy. Funded by: Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
  • A Randomized Sham-Controlled Trial of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation and Yoga for People with Knee Osteoarthritis: A Pilot and Feasibility Study. Funded by: Arthritis Society Canada.
  • Investigating the effect of prepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum factors and the Risk of Food Allergy in Children: Evidence from the CHILD Cohort Study. Funded by: Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

  • Developing sex-specific predictive models for preeclampsia. Funded by: Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
  • Mental illness among individuals with severe maternal morbidity. Funded by: Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

  • Using metabolomics to examine the association between diet, inflammation, and frailty in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA). Funded by: Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

  • Examining the relationship between functional decline and the cardiac age gap. Funded by: Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

  • Engaging an International, Multidisciplinary Group of Experts and Trainees to Discuss Trends, Disparities, and Strategies for Reducing Sever Adverse Pregnancy Events and Improve Sexual and Reproductive Health for Girls, Women and Gender-Diverse People. Funded by: Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.
  • L2M – Strategic Development of Protease-Resistant ADAMTS13 as a Therapeutic for Cardiovascular Disorders and Sepsis. Funded by: MITACS.
  • Improving Resident Preparedness and Learning on the Stroke Unit: A Quality Improvement Project. Funded by: Hamilton Academic Health Sciences Organization.
